Liverpool FC midfielder Lucas Leiva is recovering following surgery on his damaged knee which has ruled him out of the rest of the 2011/2012 season.

The Brazilian star declared on Twitter that he had gone through a successful surgical treatment in his home country, and the 24 year old will now embark on a 6 month therapy plan that could see him needing using ligament knee support to get back to full fitness.

On the micro-blogging site, he stated: ““I’m feeling good and I hope to recover as soon as possible. Thank you all for the messages.” Lucas picked up the injury during the Reds’ 2 – 0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in a Carling Cup clash at the end of November.

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish says that even though it is a blow the club’s Player of the Year will be out for such a long period, the team continues to play well.

He explained to the BBC: “It is a huge disappointment for everybody but more importantly for Lucas. It is at times like this you are tested but we have been happy with the squad and the results reflect that.”

“We are disappointed he has picked up an injury but it is not career-threatening”, Dalglish continued. “Lucas is not moping about feeling sorry for himself. We can do that, we can feel sorry for him.”
